WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY

is one of the three constitutionally autonomous state universities in Michigan and has achieved the Carnegie Research I University status. This select group of comprehensive universities offers a broad range of baccalaureate programs while demonstrating a commitment to graduate education and a significant capacity for research. Our 31,025 students study in 15 colleges and schools with more than 40 percent of the student body enrolled in graduate and professional programs. WSU offers 355 major subject areas, 128 bachelor, 136 master, and 61 different doctoral degrees plus 30 different certificate, specialist and professional programs.

WSU is located approximately two miles north of Detroit's downtown area and is in in the heart of the Cultural Center. The Detroit Institute of the Arts, Detroit Historical Museum, Detroit Science Center, Museum of African-American History and the main branch of the Detroit Public Library are all within easy walking distance. Just south of the Cultural Center is the campus of Wayne State's School of Medicine, the second largest single-campus medical school in the United States. The medical school is part of the Detroit Medical Center containing six major hospitals specializing in gynecology and obstetrics, pediatrics, oncology, psychiatry, orthopedics and emergency medical treatment. The University Tower Apartments was recently built just off the main campus and expands the number of graduate student housing facilities to five. The renovation of the oldest University building, "Old Main", was completed in 1997 in time for its centennial and hosts a modern planetarium operated by WSU College of Science and the Department of Physics & Astronomy as well the Office of the Dean for the College of Science.

Recognized for the beauty and uniqueness of its architecture, the WSU main campus encompasses 203 acres of beautifully landscaped and tree-lined malls and courts which are accentuated by lovely arcades, sculpture courts, fountain, pools, and gardens linking 94 education and research buildings. These buildings are of both classic and contemporary design, including some of Minoru Yamasaki's best known buildings. A new Recreation and Fitness Center in the center of the campus is available for the enjoyment of students and faculty. The fitness center features a large training room, with state of the art training equipment as well as free weights, an indoor rock-climbing wall, a training track, basketball courts, and a pool.

The University's outstanding School of Fine, Performing & Communication Arts provides excellent entertainment opportunities for students and faculty. The Hilberry Theater, located on the main campus, features the country's only graduate repertory theater. The company provides a continual calendar of classic and modern plays. The Bonstelle Theater, housed in a theater building adjacent to the medical campus, features undergraduate theater at its best. Another unique forum for free-ranging theatrical programs is provided by the Experimental Theater. Additionally, frequent (and often free) concerts are given by the various performing musical organizations.
